Soma Design was born from a love of all things lace, glamour and passion, with a gift for creating exquisitely designed gowns. Based in the new flagship store in Ultimo, the bespoke bridal boutique will translate your ideas into sketches and then into reality.
“I have been designing wedding gowns for more than 17 years,” says designer and owner of Soma Design, Yan Pothin. With an honours degree in design and coming from a background in the fashion industry, it was a somewhat seamless transition into the world of couture dressmaking for the designer. “Working in fashion was great, fast-paced and ever-changing, but I felt I needed to change my direction and, through the advice of a friend, I was introduced to the bridal industry. I instantly fell in love!” says the designer.
Yan works closely with his clients to get a clear understanding of what the bride wants. “I ask customers to bring any ideas they have to the initial meeting. That’s where we narrow down the looks,” he explains. “We discuss details such as shape, neckline, fabric and the styles the bride feels work best on her.”
The bridal brand is passionate about creating new and unique pieces. “Every client is different and every client has a different idea of what their wedding gown should look like. That’s what makes every dress bespoke,” says Yan. “That’s what motivates me — the constant challenge of something new and exciting every time!”
