Prepping your bridal locks
02 June 2011
We often hear about the pre-wedding regime of diet, exercise and facials that a bride-to-be kick-starts as soon as she becomes engaged. Determined to look slim and toned in her wedding dress, with skin aglow and an overall manicured look, most brides are neglecting a major component of their beauty preparation: their hair. Just as it’s important to develop a skincare routine as early as possible in the lead-up to your wedding, so too should you look after your hair, thereby ensuring a glossy, healthy mane for the big day.
Hairstylist Dario Cotroneo, owner of his eponymous boutique salon in Darlinghurst, has filled the past 20 years styling high-fashion editorial and working with celebrities and media clientele. His distinctive, sexy hairstyles have featured in Harpers Bazaar, Singapore Elle, New Woman, Cosmopolitan, Cleo, Shop Till You Drop, Black and White, Cream, Autore, Madison and TV commercials. And now he’s sharing with us his pre-wedding hair care tips that will give your hair the boost it needs for your big day.
What are the best hair care tips you recommend to brides-to-be?
Shampoo and condition your hair with Alterna's Caviar Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner at least three times a week. Apply Caviar Overnight Rescue (Alterna) at least once a week, applying to dry hair just before going to bed, then washing out in the morning. This repairs hair internally and will help restore hair back to beautiful condition while you sleep.
What essential beauty tips would you recommend a bride-to-be follow in the lead-up to her big day?
At least twice per week apply Alterna’s Caviar Mask to hair after shampooing and leave in for five minutes. Rinse the mask out and then condition hair to lock it in. This will make your hair feel great, as it works from the outside in.
How long before the wedding should brides begin their hair care routine?
My tip is that it’s best to start this routine three months before your big day to see the results you want.
You are known for creating styling accessory MYCURL, which allows you to create gorgeous curls, volume and movement in minutes. Is this suitable for brides?
Yes, if you are wearing your hair up MYCURL is a hit with wedding hairdressers as it works amazingly fast to prepare hair for your wedding up-do.
I do prefer seeing brides wear their hair down; think Valentino. To achieve this look, place four to five MYCURLs in your hair with Tonic Spray by Alterna to hold your style all day long.
Another great wedding example is how Kate Middleton wore her hair for her wedding. She did not change who she was for the big day; she only enhanced it and that is what MYCURL will do for you.
Here are some popular styles that can be recreated using MYCURL.

TIP: When recreating this curly style, the larger the hair the smaller the face will feel.

TIP: This straight style is all about powerful hair. Designed to impress, it’s advised to only wear it once a month! This will ensure you look fresh and break up your styling habits, giving you the most out of your power style.

TIP: This look gives an amazing profile and is ideal for those with a dominant chin. This style draws attention away from the chin area to ensure you look and feel beautiful.

TIP: This sexy wavy style gives a “model off duty” feel. It helps the wearer look relaxed and naturally glamorous.
