Is Bigger Really Better?
04 August 2011
If you have not yet seen My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, which recently aired on pay-television, you are really missing out on a spectacle. The show centres on Gypsy girls — some aged as young as 16 — as they prepare for their big day. These girls are not your average brides, however; Gypsy travellers opt for over-the-top, celebrity-inspired gowns that often prove to be problematic when it comes to walking down the aisle. Although these girls are conservative in many aspects of their lives, their dresses are not. In light of these out-there Gypsy gowns, we’ve picked the most outrageous celebrity wedding dresses for your viewing pleasure. Prepare to be wowed!
Katie Price
Yes, you knew it was coming. How could we not mention Katie Price’s wedding dress first and foremost? The glamour model — also known as Jordan — was a vision of Swarovski crystal, tulle and pink when she married her first husband, Peter Andre. Reportedly designed by Isabell Kristensen, Katie’s dress was the epitome of over-the-top grandeur and extravagance, with her bodice leaving nothing to the imagination. Katie donned a matching tiara and veil that cascaded over her tulle skirt, reminiscent of a Disney fairytale princess!
Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey made quite an impression when she married Tommy Mottola in 1993. Mariah wore a Vera Wang gown that featured off-the-shoulder, puffy sleeves and a 27-foot long train. The dress, supposedly inspired by Princess Diana’s wedding gown, cost the singer $25,000 — a pretty hefty price to pay in the early ‘90s! It is also said that Mariah needed the help of six guests to carry her weighty train. Talk about high maintenance!
Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani has always been known for her innovative and unique sense of fashion — and her wedding gown was no exception. Gwen married her long-time partner, Gavin Rossdale, in a gown designed by John Galliano for Dior. The dress featured a white bodice that transitioned to hot pink for the skirt, and suited Stefani’s personality to a tee. Since the wedding, Gwen has donated her dress to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Gwen claims her dress should be rightfully placed in the museum, as it was a “work of art”.
The bridal dresses of the Gypsy community, as well as the gowns worn by Price, Carey and Stefani, have captured the attention and imagination of women around the world. It’s reasonable to suggest that in order to wow their guests, celebrity brides have chosen to wear larger-than-life creations — although we should not forget to mention the more alternative choices that some celebrity brides have made when it came to picking their gowns (or lack of!). Sarah Jessica Parker chose to wear an understated black frock when she married Matthew Broderick in New York. And who could forget Pamela Anderson’s choice of outfit when tying the knot with second husband, Kid Rock? Pam married on a yacht in St Tropez wearing a beautiful white and understated … bikini. It was an interesting choice of wedding attire; at least she didn’t have to worry about finding the perfect dress!
When a celebrity gets married, the choice of gown is always a hot topic. Most women choose bridal dresses to suit their personality, whether it is loud and bold or quiet and subtle. These celebrity examples prove you can let your imagination run wild when designing your wedding dress. However, keep this little thought in mind: is bigger always better?
