Get me to the church on time

Make a memorable entrance on your big day in your transport of choice

Choice of transport, Wedding Transport, Wedding CarsGetting to the church on time is not the only driving force behind your selection of transport. As with all aspects of your wedding, this element will influence the mood and theme of the day and needs to be considered with plenty of time to spare. Indulge in your fantasy wheels but ensure you both agree it will create the right look on the day and in photos for years to come.

Vehicle options

Let the theme of your wedding guide you when it comes to choosing your mode of transportation. A decadent do, for example, calls for a chauffeur-driven stretch limo, Rolls Royce or Bentley. A traditional celebration would be best suited to a vintage wedding car, from a 1920s Dodge to a 1930s Vauxhall. A classic American car is ideal for a quirky theme; a Cadillac or Chevrolet arriving at the ceremony will get your wedding off to a fun start.

Of course, cars aren’t the only options available. For something really different you might like to arrive by boat or helicopter (this obviously depends on your ceremony location). A helicopter can land almost anywhere and is sure to give your guests something to talk about. A horse and carriage or motorbike will also make an impressive statement. The logistics of these options need to be worked out and it is important to consider the beautiful bride and bridesmaids who have spent hours on their makeup and hair — a helmet head is not the best look!

Current trends

Everyone wants their wedding day to stand out from the rest and your choice of vehicle provides an outlet for doing so. Today’s couples are taking advantage of the growing “novelty car” market. In recent years, the bridal industry has welcomed the likes of hot pink or limousine hummers, caravans, 1950s London taxis or even the classic rickshaw.

Modern luxury cars are also experiencing popularity in the bridal market. Guys in particular will relish the opportunity to realise their car dreams by hiring a prestige model for the big day. Channel the spirit of James Bond in an Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini, all of which will see you arrive in style, the envy of all your guests.

Transport traditions

As with many aspects of bridal celebrations, the cars are a symbolic element of the big day. Today’s custom of decorating a wedding car is a modernised version of the “bedding” of newlyweds. In this age-old tradition, bridesmaids would decorate the marriage bed with flowers and ribbons to highlight the significance of procreation. These days, the bridal party stays out of the bedroom and decorates the car instead with balloons, streamers, signs and even shoes.

Similar traditions are upheld around the world. In Italy, for example, flowers are used to decorate the front of the wedding car to ensure happy travels through life for the bride and groom. In Egypt, after the ceremony, couples drive their decorated car to the reception. Family and friends surround the wedding car, honking their horns to advise passersby that a wedding has occurred.

Cars play yet another role during the day. Traditionally, as the bride and groom leave the reception horns are honked, bells chimed and fireworks set off in the evening. This celebratory cacophony of noise is intended to keep evil spirits at bay, establishing a curse-free beginning to the newlyweds’ marriage life.
